ACCORDING to Perth eco architect Mr Andrew Ferguson the need to
produce 'green report cards' for new and existing homes is not far
away.
Mr Ferguson of Ecotect-Architects today said it will not be long
before it is a requirement for all new homes and those on the
market to have comprehensive sustainability and energy rating
report cards.
"I believe prospective buyers will start turning up to home
opens with check lists and compasses to determine if homes have
been designed to complement the surrounding environment, are
passive solar in design and include energy saving devices and
fixtures," he said.
"It's only fair and reasonable to assume property buyers will
want to know how much it will cost to run and maintain a new or
existing home before signing a contract.
"Electricity, gas and water prices continue to escalate at
exorbitant rates and sensibly designed homes that require less
energy will be in high demand," said Mr Ferguson.
Mr Ferguson said investors and second and subsequent home owners
want more for their money and are aware of the advantages of
purchasing solar and energy efficient homes.
"Property investors know energy efficient homes that comply with
climate sensible principles are better designed, sturdier in
construction and return higher yields.
"They also know these homes attract better tenants," said Mr
Ferguson.
Mr Ferguson said he believed insurance companies will follow
suite and start reducing premiums for passive solar homes that have
been built to better withstand storms, high winds, floods and
bushfires.
"In the interim I would recommend property owners have home
sustainability assessments conducted which will assist them to make
energy-saving changes to their homes." he said.
