Commercial Project:
South Hedland Subdivision
In 2010 the VDM Group contacted
Ecotect-Architects to provide them with design and environmental
advice on what to build and not build on 93 hectares of land in
South Hedland. While the land had already been carved up into
'special rural lots' not any house could be placed on these newly
created 1.2 hectare lots. This is because the land is subjected to
frequent flooding, high cyclonic winds and temperature extremes
making engineering and building costs associated with house
construction expensive and tricky.
Ecotect-Architects' solution was to
provide a range of climate sensibly designed portable homes that
would be built in Perth and transported to South Hedland where they
would be quickly assembled. A range of design options were;
therefore, submitted to provide VDM and their clients with home
layout and design choices. It was noted the design of homes in the
state's northwest vary considerably from the southern states as the
sun's solar path is different because South Hedland is closer to
the equator. This means the placement of windows and doors in a
home and its orientation must be carefully calculated to ensure it
best complies with the climate sensible design principles for that
location.
This was an innovative and clever
solution and is now being embraced by mining companies and property
developers that understand the cost and transport benefits of
portable housing.
