The site for this project represents a major challenge in
creating adequate passive solar access to interior and exterior
spaces. The design response was to create a combination of three
major wings, each one optimising appropriate solar orientation
within the constraints of the site whilst also presenting a
frontage which is aligned with the street.
The three volumes focus on a central courtyard which will be the
focus of exterior activities on the site. The composition of the
three wings also creates several secondary courtyards, with each
one serving a different practical or aesthetic function.
The design process has aimed to create a contemporary form using
locally significant materials; this is part of our continuing
design philosophy of creating environmentally sensitive
architecture that has a strong sense of place.
