Residential Project:

Dalkeith Retrofit

The client wished to keep the existing house that was built by her father, but generally upgrade the appearance and improve the thermal performance as it was extremely cold in winter. An indoor/outdoor room was built in the centre of the existing "u" shaped plan. The Indoor Outdoor Room roof is Everbrite Polycarbonate and there are solar timber slats to create shade in summer while letting the winter sun in. The Apex in the gable roof can be sealed off in winter to keep the warmth in while it can be opened in summer to flush out the heat. The remainder of the house was upgraded, re-roofed and rendered, the existing internal timber floors were exposed, refurbishing the kitchen and bathrooms and increasing the size of one room to create a master bedroom.

Environmental features - Retrofitting existing houses saves "embodied energy".Indoor /outdoor room passive solar design to regulate temperature within the house. North facing solar pergola and vine to front of house. Underground water tanks feed back into cisterns. Above ground water tanks provide water for back garden. Solar Hot water . system. Water wise garden.
