The design of any house located in the north west presents a
number of constraints, ranging from extreme climatic conditions to
high construction costs. Our experience in passive solar design for
remote areas all over Western Australia was crucial in the
development of this cost effective design. When completed, the
house will provide comfortable and energy efficient living to a
high standard rarely seen in the area.
The design has a large outdoor living courtyard at its centre,
which is shielded from the summer sun and hot winds. The house is
designed to capture cooling winds and to maximise cross
ventilation. Excessive solar gains are prevented through optimal
orientation, generous eaves overhangs, screening devices and
appropriately sized window openings.
The specified construction techniques and materials have been
carefully selected in order to suit local construction techniques
and availablility; this has kept the cost of construction as low as
possible, whilst not compromising on thermal performance and
occupant comfort.
